Jon Sopel

Since 2014, Jon Sopel has held the prestigious post of North America Editor, the most senior foreignposting in the BBC. Since moving to Washington, he's conducted an exclusive interview with President Obama, has travelled on Air Force One – and famously clashed with President Trump at a White House news conference. His book 'If Only They Didn't Speak English, notes from Trump's America' was an acclaimed best-seller. His new book on the Trump White House, A Year at the Circus, came out in September 2019.

Career

Prior to his US posting, Jon presented a new programme for BBC World News, 'Global with Jon Sopel', which was launched in January 2013, and for many years he was also the main presenter of 'The Politics Show'; a weekly broadcast for the BBC where he interviewed key politicians including Tony Blair, David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Jack Straw, Gordon Brown and Condoleezza Rice.

In addition to these key roles, Jon also presents Today on Radio 4 when he is back in the UK, the BBC’s flagship news programme. He has also sat in the anchor seat on Breakfast News, BBC News at One, BBC News at Six and BBC News at 10. 

He has played a key role in major political and international stories, anchoring coverage on location from around the world, including the funeral of Nelson Mandela, the inauguration of the new Pope, countless presidential elections, wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East, and a number of natural disasters.  Jon has also held the position of Chief Political Correspondent, and spent four years living in France as the BBC's Paris Correspondent.

Books

Jon also wrote a biography of Tony Blair, 'Tony Blair; The Moderniser'. And as well as the two books he has written in the US, he has been commissioned to write a third – a diary of the 2020 election

Awards

Jon has received many awards for his work including being shortlisted for the National Presenter of the Year at the Royal Television Society Television Journalism Awards in 2011/12, and political

journalist of the year in 2007. 

Personal Life

Jon currently lives in Washington DC with his wife, Linda.
