Anthony Hilton

Anthony Hilton joined Fleet Street in 1968 as a Trainee on the Guardian. He was on the Observer as a business feature writer from 1969-1971, the Daily Mail from 1971-1972 and the Sunday Express 1972-1974. He then edited Accountancy Age from 1974 until he moved to New York for the Sunday Times in 1979, returning to become a City Editor of the Times in 1981. In 1983 he left to help set up Redwood Publishing and in 1984 moved to the Evening Standard where he was City Editor from 1984 to 1989. In November 1989 he became Managing Director of the Evening Standard, a post he held for six years before returning to the City Office as Financial Editor and economics leader writer for the paper.

In addition he is a visiting professor in economics at London Metropolitan University. And in 2010 was awarded an honorary degree in recognition of his journalism by the University of Aberdeen.

Anthony won the 2007 "Decade of Excellence Award" for business and financial journalism given annually by the World Press Awards in competition with a short list of writers from Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal and other English language titles. Also in 2007 he was named as the UK Pensions Journalist of the Year by AON, the Commentator of the Year by the Private Equity and Venture Capital Association and was runner-up as Financial Journalist of the Year by the Institute of Internal Auditors. His most recent award in November 2009 and won again in 2010 was the Association of British Insurers "Commentator of the Year",

Anthony gained an MA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Aberdeen.

In addition to journalism he has also had a commercial career, serving as Managing Director of the Evening Standard company for six years and being involved with the launch of several magazine and publishing companies.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Foundation, a management consultancy specialising in understanding customer relationships and was previously a non-executive director of a Lloyd's insurance company.

He was for 17 years a trustee director and a member of the investment advisory board of the Daily Mail pension schemes which has responsibility for funds in excess of 2 billion.

He has also served on the boards of various charitable and public bodies among them the St John's Ambulance appeal, the Children's Film foundation, the Aberdeen University Sixth Century appeal and London First.

He has written two acclaimed books, How to Communicate Financial Information to Employees, and City Within a State - A study of how London really works.

He lives in Suffolk and is married with four children. He is a former parachutist but now less strenuously cruises on England's canals!
